CPIT-455 · Software Engineering II

Instructor: Professor Adeeb Noor · King Abdulaziz University
Prerequisite: CPIT-251
Primary text: Ian Sommerville, Software Engineering, 10th edition.

The approved course specification lists 11 course learning outcomes, and its topic allocation guides the learning path. The course as delivered is presented in the course specification. Grades, deadlines, rooms and the official timetable are announced in Blackboard.

Each chapter has five local learning objectives. They support the course outcomes below; they do not replace or renumber them.

USE OF GENERATIVE AI · FCIT POLICY

Use of Generative AI

The course follows the FCIT Generative AI Policy Guide for Course Syllabus of the Faculty of Computing and Information Technology and adopts its Option C, Mixed Approach. Each assessment has its own permitted level: the examinations and the in-class check are AI-Free; Part A of Assignments 6–9 is AI-Free; the Python build and the work after commitment are AI-Assisted, as stated on each assignment page; no assessment is AI-Integrated. Students declare any AI use, and use beyond the permitted level may be treated as academic misconduct. The AI level of every assessment.

4Design safety in safety-critical systems.12Hazard trace and safety case
5Design and test secure systems.13Misuse cases and proposed negative tests
6Design systems to support resilience.14Critical service and recovery reasoning
7Identify reuse elements and approaches.15Reuse strategy comparison
8Describe composition of standardized reusable components.16Interface contract and composition
9Explain distributed systems and architectures.17Architecture and remote-failure reasoning
10Explain systems of systems and engineering challenges.20Governance and staged acceptance
11Design and implement test cases across testing strategies.12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 20Every build in Assignments 3–9 has the student write and run at least three tests, a mutation test against known buggy versions, and a coverage step: the build record measures line and branch coverage of the student’s code (gate outcomes for the fault tree), the student changes one input, runs again, and names the branch still untested. The sentence is part of the submission.

Original source packs

Source-slide numbers refer to the original slide pack, not textbook page numbers. Each chapter links to a separately loaded source text/table ledger. Download the original file for complete slide layout and vector diagrams.

Assignments and assessment

Assignment 1 retains 4 points; Assignments 2–9 retain 5 points. All current rubrics use four performance levels (1, 0.75, 0.5, 0 per criterion), and each criterion describes what every level means. Source application and transfer reasoning are included within these totals. These task points are not course-grade percentages.

The core workflow remains stable while the artifact progresses: measure, trace, test, recover, compare, specify a contract, reason about remote failure, and integrate across owners. Each assessed case is fictional; any additional evidence must be marked proposed or unknown.

NCAAA, Jaheziah and iSCARB

Knowledge, skills and accountable judgment are made visible through objectives, practice and artifacts. The course files do not establish a current approved national item-weight or departmental mapping. Accordingly, this release does not claim accreditation, official test equivalence or guaranteed national-test readiness.

The full iSCARB toolkit preserves the six engineering capabilities, Decision Card, AI verification gate and practice explanations. These remain tools to support learning rather than a second set of chapter content to race through.

Light first load; complete sources on demand

The lecture shell, shared runtime and active figure load for teaching. Original PDFs, PowerPoints, full source text and image galleries load when opened. No source topic is removed merely to reduce the initial download.

Every chapter has 20 main slides, exactly five local objectives, three active stations and the canonical 20-rule map. Assignment raw points are unchanged. STRESS reaches students only after Part A is committed: automatically for Assignments 1–2, through Blackboard from Assignment 3. The original source is authoritative for historical wording, diagrams and mathematical layout; authored qualifications are labelled.

Textbook chapters

These are the textbook chapter PDFs used by the lectures. Their page numbers are separate from source-slide numbers.
